A kid’s got to eat: What’s new for breakfast and lunch

  • New entrees, faster breakfast, and a different brand of pizza are in the works at some CVUSD schools this fall.

Elementary students craving a rib sandwich will get their wish when the new Rib-B-Que Sandwich will be introduced after Labor Day. Also going on junior high and high school menus in early September are double cheeseburgers, bacon cheeseburgers, and a diced chicken Cobb salad. Also, a bigger assortment of veggies will be added to side salads at all elementary schools. In addition, the pizza vendor for Pizza Fridays at secondary schools has been changed to Pizza Hut.

Cal Aero Preserve Academy in Chino is piloting a Grab and Go breakfast in the quad area of the school for students who are in a hurry to get to class. The Grab and Go food cart can serve up to 100 breakfasts. Cal Aero’s kitchen, which is just a bit farther from classrooms, will continue to serve breakfast.

Chino Hills High has discontinued its Second Chance Breakfast, so breakfast is only being served before the first bell rings.

CVUSD also offers breakfast at 27 other school sites: Borba, Butterfield Ranch, Cattle, Chaparral, Cortez, Dickey, Dickson, Eagle Canyon, Glenmeade, Liberty, Litel, Marshall, Newman, Rhodes, Rolling Ridge, and Walnut Avenue elementary schools; Briggs Fundamental (K-8); Canyon Hills, Magnolia, Ramona, Townsend, and Woodcrest junior high schools; Ayala, Chino, and Don Lugo high schools; Buena Vista Continuation High and Chino Valley Learning Academy.

Full-priced school lunches have increased 25 cents this school year. Lunch for elementary students is $2.75, and $3.00 for secondary (junior high and high school) students. Breakfast continues to be $1.00 for elementary and $1.25 for secondary.

Reduced price meals for income-eligible students remain the same as last school year: 40 cents for lunch, 25 cents for breakfast. And some students may be eligible for free meals. Parents may also fill out paper applications at school sites and at the Nutrition Services Department at the Chino Valley Unified School District Office, 5130 Riverside Drive, Chino.
